Taxi Fares Set to Go Up

Taxis in Costa Rica will be posting a new fare for the first kilometer beginning next week. Instead of the ¢510 fixed price for the first kilometer, taxi drivers will set their meters at ¢530.

The increase comes ten months after the last raise, and at a time when the price of gas is falling. According to new prices published by the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) on Friday, the price of a liter of gasoline will fall from ¢587 to ¢573 (for super) and from ¢562 to ¢548 (for plus).

The fare for the first kilometer charged by airport taxis will also increase from its current rate of ¢775 to ¢785.

Taxi fares are calculated by ARESEP based on the colón/dollar exchange rate, salaries of taxi drivers and oil prices.

Updated with price correction Monday from Friday’s report.
