Stretch of Caldera Highway shut down for 15 days Sunday night

The road between Atenas-Orotina on the Caldera Highway will be closed at least two weeks starting Sunday night, according to construction company Autopistas del Sol.

The 11-kilometer stretch has undergone several repairs since it opened last year (TT, June 15, 2010). Since its opening on Jan. 27, 2010, mudslides and falling rocks have been responsible for several injuries and a death on the highway that leads to Caldera on the Pacific Coast.

Drivers will be re-routed to the winding, former passage between Atenas and Orotina that goes through Monte de Aguacate.

The construction will include leveling off parts of the highway and replacing bridges on the route.
