6.1-magnitude earthquake rocks Panama

PANAMA CITY – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Panama on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The tremor hit the southern part of the country early in the morning Saturday, and no victims or damages have been reported.

Panama’s Geosciences Institute said that the temblor shook the western provinces of Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro, and the central provinces of Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera and Cocle, but no damage was reported.

The scientific institute said on The institute’s website rated the temblor with a 5.8-magnitude and said the quake occurred at 3:19 a.m. with its epicenter southwest of Coiba Island in the Pacific Ocean off the Panama coast.

This is the third seismic movement this week in Panama. The first was a magnitude-4.7 quake last Monday at the town of Puerto Armuelles, Chiriqui province, while on Wednesday a second one hit, a magnitude-4 temblor with its epicenter in the Gulf of Chiriqui between Coiba Island and Puerto Armuelles.
