Zelaya cleared to return to Honduras

A recent agreement will allow ousted former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya to return to his country. Zelaya is expected to return to Honduras on Saturday.

Due to the efforts taken by the Colombian and Venezuelan governments, the current Honduran president Porfirio Lobo and Zelaya signed an agreement last Sunday that would allow for the exiled leader to return.. The deal will allow Honduras to be accepted again in the Organization of American States.

“(The agreement) gives Honduras the opportunity to pursue national reconciliation and end its isolation from the international community,” said U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a press release. “Today is a great day for the people of Honduras and for all Hondurans around the world.”

The Costa Rican government also showed its satisfaction, considering the agreement to be a milestone in the process of integrating all Central America countries.

“We hope the agreement helps Honduras overcome its political crisis,” stated Costa Rica’s Foreign Ministry in a press release. “This move will help enforce democratic institutions in the country.”

The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, praised the agreement. Chávez said his government would monitor that the deal is followed. Chávez added that he believes “internal forces in Honduras that will try to boycott the deal.” Other political figures in Latin America supported the deal, calling it a “wise” move.
