Korean artists to drum up thrills with free concert

Korean performance company Dulsori will give a free show Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater of the National Culture Center (CENAC) in downtown San José. Blending traditional Korean rhythms with modern percussion arrangements, Dulsori has performed around the world since its creation in 1984.

The performance will serve as a preview of the 2012 International Arts Festival (FIA), set to kick off March 15. The 10-day festival will spotlight arts from around the Korean Peninsula, including traditional music, ceramics, cinema and calligraphy.

“Korea has an increasingly diverse culture in which traditions coexist with its contemporary and cosmopolitan society,” FIA Director Anselmo Navarro said in a press release.

South Korea was chosen as the featured guest country for the festival after Culture Minister Manuel Obregón and Vice Minister Iván Rodríguez toured the country in May.

“Korea has a lot to show and teach us about the spirit of their enormous tradition,” Obregón said in the release.
