Honor Veterans Day in Escazú this Sunday

The Escazú Christian Fellowship will honor Commonwealth Remembrance Day and U.S Veterans Day during a 5 p.m. service at the International Baptist Church in Guachipelín, Escazú, a suburb southwest of San José, on Sunday. Refreshments will be served following the service.

The ceremony is to commemorate military veterans, including those who have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day and Armistice Day (Veterans Day) were introduced at the end of World War I is normally celebrated on Nov. 11. The armistice, which ended the war and what was then regarded as “the war to end all wars,” was signed in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. For that reason, Nov. 11 was set aside as a day to remember the sacrifices of veterans.

Members of the American Legion Post 10 of Escazú, the Costa Rica Marine Corps League and other veterans organizations will be in attendance.

Pastor Stacey Steck will lead the service, which will begin and end with a bugle call by Philip Jarman. Chaplin Jerry Thomas of the Costa Rica Marine Corps League will offer a prayer for all veterans. Scottish-American piper Kevin Ludeke will play bagpipes.  Featured speakers include British Ambassador Sharon Campbell, Canadian Ambassador Cameron MacKay and U.S Deputy Chief of Mission Eric Nelson.

The service is open to the public. The International Baptist Church is located 1 kilometer west of the Multiplaza Mall in Escazú on the road to Santa Ana.
