A microbus heading to the Juan Santamaría Airport in San José fell from a bridge above the Río Segundo on Saturday morning, killing the driver and two Spanish tourists.
Around 5 a.m. Saturday, driver Manuel Guillén, 50, lost control of the vehicle as it traveled over the Río Segundo bridge on the General Cañas Highway that connects San José with the northwest Alajuela province, according to a press statement from the Judicial Investigation Police. The bus swerved, broke through the bridge security railing and plunged 35 meters into the riverbed below. Guillén and Spanish tourists Daniel Canduela and Enrique Castro died on impact.
Guillén worked for the Hotel Barceló San José Palacio and was taking Canduela and Castro to the airport for their return trip to Spain. According to the daily La Nación, a representative from the transit police assumed that Guillén, who had worked the overnight shift at the hotel, fell asleep at the wheel.
