Long Lines Hit Costa Rica Airport After Midday Flight Surge

Long lines formed Saturday at the departure immigration area of Juan Santamaría International Airport after a heavy midday wave of flights pushed thousands of passengers through Costa Rica’s main airport at the same time. Videos shared on social media showed large groups of foreign travelers waiting to complete exit immigration controls at the Alajuela terminal. Costa Rica’s Immigration Administration said the congestion was caused by an unusual concentration of flights around midday, not by a system failure.

Immigration Director Omer Badilla told Teletica that between 15 and 20 flights arrived in the same window, moving an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 passengers through the airport. Officials said additional personnel were sent to the area after the bottleneck was detected and that the flow of passengers was later brought under control.

The scene came as Costa Rica enters a busier travel period, with more movement expected through the main airport on weekends. Badilla said Saturdays tend to be the airport’s heaviest day and said authorities expected less passenger movement on Sunday. AERIS, the company that manages Juan Santamaría International Airport, described the situation as a specific issue tied to immigration processing and said the airport was under control later Saturday.

For those coming here, the incident is a reminder that SJO can become crowded when several international flights overlap, especially during school vacation periods, long weekends and high-volume travel windows. Passengers departing Costa Rica should continue to arrive early, confirm their flight status with the airline and leave extra time for airline check-in, security and immigration controls.

The airport’s official flight schedule Saturday evening showed multiple international departures to destinations including Frankfurt, San Salvador, Guatemala City, Madrid, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Bogotá, Panama City, Miami, Denver, Mexico City and Orlando, reflecting the volume of traffic moving through the terminal.

The delays also point to a recurring challenge at Juan Santamaría. In March, it was reported that some arriving tourists had faced waits of up to two hours at immigration during peak periods. At that time, Migration officials acknowledged structural limits at the terminal that prevent authorities from simply adding more officers at every busy period.

Those earlier problems were reported in the arrivals area. Saturday’s congestion was reported at departure immigration control, where travelers leaving Costa Rica complete exit procedures before boarding.

No flight cancellations were immediately attributed to Saturday’s immigration lines, and authorities said the immediate bottleneck had been resolved. Still, travelers using SJO this weekend should expect possible crowding during peak departure windows and should avoid arriving at the last minute.
