Herediano beats MLS champs Atlanta United, 3-1

Club Sport Herediano has a foot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals after defeating Atlanta United F.C., 3-1, on Thursday night.

José Ortiz, Randall Azofeifa and Esteban Granados scored for the Costa Rican side, while Julian Gressel provided a crucial away goal for the reigning Major League Soccer champions.

The two teams will meet again on Feb. 28 at Fifth-Third Bank Stadium, about 20 miles outside Atlanta. The winner of the home-and-home on aggregate will advance to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Costa Rica’s Deportivo Saprissa is the country’s other participant in the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League. Saprissa defeated Tigres UANL, 1-0, on Tuesday in Tibás.
