Costa Rica to support Palestine
Costa Rica will support the recognition of a Palestinian state, the Foreign Ministry announced Thursday in a press release.
The statement said that the support comes with the caveat that Palestine does not compromise the right to existence and security of Israel.
For weeks, the media and Costa Rican political activists had speculated about whether the government would support Palestine’s existence.
The Palestinians said they will formally submit their request for U.N. membership on Tuesday, when world leaders begin gathering in New York for the 66th session of the General Assembly. Two U.S. senators had discouraged Costa Rica from recognizing Palestine at the upcoming assembly meeting.
