Shipwreck Kills 1, Injures 2 Others

MANAGUA – One Chinese national died and two others were injured when a boat sank in the Kukra Hill River, on the Atlantic Coast, a police spokesman said Sunday.

Nine people, all apparently from the People’s Republic of China, survived the mishap after their boat collided with a cargo ship about 150 meters from the port of Kukra Hill.

Police are holding the nine uninjured Chinese, who will be turned over to immigration officials for processing, police said. Only three of the individuals carried Chinese passports, and none spoke English or Spanish.
