Photo exhibit on Paseo de las Damas inspires with Olympic images

It’s going to be hard to walk down Paseo de las Damas near Morazan Park without getting inspired in the next few days. You can thank the people at the British Embassy in San José if you can’t get the “Chariots of Fire” title theme out of your head after passing by– they are the ones responsible for the photo exhibit “London Games 2012: A journey through sport” gracing the walls that line the street.

The photos feature Olympic athletes practicing their sport in iconic locations across the United Kingdom. The exhibit is presented as part of the Transitarte festival running through this weekend and is part of the British Embassy’s efforts to promote the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in London this summer.

“We’re doing this so that people can see that the Olympic Games take place throughout the whole of the United Kingdom,” said British Ambassador, Sharon Campbell. “And to get people inspired, maybe, to take up a new sport.”

Photos in the exhibit feature wheelchair basketball players tipping off in front of Windsor Castle and a weight lifter striding past the megaliths of Stonehenge.

The Embassy is also touting the London Games as the most sustainable Olympic Games ever held. Campbell said 97 percent of the materials used in the construction of the London Olympic Stadium are re-used or recycled materials, and that the after the games parts of the stadium can be deconstructed and removed to accommodate smaller crowds.

“Essentially, we have a fit-for-purpose stadium,” said Campbell.
