Taxi drivers end protests after government promises no new permits

Taxi drivers protesting in various parts of the country Monday reached an agreement with the government to end demonstrations that tied up traffic for hours.

Taxis drivers asked government officials not to grant new special permits allowing minibuses, buses and porteadores, or informal chauffeurs, to legally operate, saying it would hurt the formal taxi sector.

In a meeting that took more than an hour, government negotiators agreed not to issue new permits to the informal taxi sector and to review applications for permits already issued.

Officials also agreed to expedite the process for issuing taxi license plates.
