Family confirms death of missing Tico in Switzerland

Mariela Brenes on Tuesday confirmed that a search team had discovered the body of her brother, Jorge Mario Brenes Jaikel, 30, missing since Wednesday at a ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland.

At 8 a.m. local time in Switzerland, the family posted a message on Facebook, saying, “We always said from day one we would not stop [searching] until we found him. … We found him, and we are happy and have an incredible inner peace. He chose this place, the perfect place to receive God.” The family asked for privacy and said they would not comment further.

Costa Rican Ambassador to Switzerland Isabel Montero told in a release that Swiss officials have not yet confirmed the identity of a body that was discovered this morning in the crack of a glacier.

“The body was taken to the village of Zermatt and transferred to the coroner’s office. They must wait until tomorrow to perform an autopsy and an identification of the body by the family,” she added.
