Costa Rican fishing boat adrift at sea rescued by private yacht

A 10-meter fishing vessel named the Maria Christina II that had been adrift for six days due to a mechanical failure was rescued by a private yacht on Friday in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica, the daily Bermuda Sun reported.

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received an alert from the yacht, the Golden Odyssey, that its crew had rescued the fishing boat and was towing it to Cocos Island, 550 km off the coast of Costa Rica.

Lt. Rodolfo Murillo, operations chief at the Costa Rican Coast Guard, on Monday confirmed that both ships arrived at Cocos Island Saturday, and crew members are in good condition.

The disabled boat’s crew is waiting for spare parts before returning to the Pacific port of Puntarenas.
