TABASCO – Mexican police on Wednesday arrested 107 undocumented immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador in the southern state of Tabasco, according to the local daily, Vanguardia.
The detained — 52 Hondurans, 30 Guatemalans and 25 Salvadorans — were apprehended at a train and bus station during a random check, according to a statement by the Public Security Ministry (SSP).
Officers from the National Immigration Institute (INM) said that among those arrested were five minors aged between age 9 and 17, who entered illegally into Mexico, according to official reports.
On September 21, 18 Hondurans and a woman from Guatemala were also detained in the same city.
An estimated 300,000 undocumented immigrants annually cross Mexico from Central America, trying to reach to the United States. But the economic crisis and violence in Mexico led to a decrease; fewer than 140,000 crossed last year, according to INM figures.
