Eight tremors registered between Sunday and Monday morning in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI) recorded a total of eight earthquakes of magnitudes ranging 2.4 to 4.4 this weekend.

Most occurred in the provinces of Guanacaste and Puntarenas. The strongest was felt Sunday, at 1 a.m., with a magnitude of 4.4 and an epicenter located 10 kilometers southwest of Malpaís in Puntarenas.

That quake was followed by two more in Nandayure, Guanacaste. The first – of magnitude-3.0 – happened at 2:20 a.m. and the second – of magnitude-3.5 – at 2:57 a.m.

Five aftershocks registered lower magnitudes. One at 1:44 p.m. on Sunday registered 2.6 in Nicoya, followed by one of 2.4 at 8:34 p.m.

On Monday, another magnitude-2.4 earthquake was reported at 3:07 a.m., with an epicenter near Moravia, north of the capital.

At 3:31, another magnitude-3.0 earth tremor was recorded in San Isidro, in the province of Heredia, and another of 2.6 at 5:56 a.m. was reported in the Caribbean province of Limón.

OVSICORI experts said the activity is not cause for concern, because “it is a normal process of reactivation of plates that usually happens after a major earthquake,” a reference to the powerful magnitude-7.6 quake that occurred Sept. 5.
