Increased rainfall expected this week in Costa Rica

A weather phenomenon in the Caribbean moving towards Jamaica has a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next few hours, the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) said on Monday.

The storm system’s impact on Costa Rica depends on its trajectory, speed and intensity, the IMN said. However, the institute’s most recent analysis said increased rainfall is expected from Monday afternoon until at least Wednesday.

Areas most likely to be affected include the northern Pacific region and the Central Valley, two areas already hit hard in recent weeks by heavy rain, which has caused severe flooding in some communities.

The IMN recommends continued vigilance in vulnerable areas of the northwestern province of Guanacaste, the southern Pacific region, and the Central Valley, where some areas are prone to flooding due to saturated sewer systems.
