Officials reopen traffic on General Cañas Highway

At 5 a. m. on Tuesday, authorities from the Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) reopened three lanes of traffic on the General Cañas Highway, following the collapse last Thursday of a Bailey bridge when an 84-ton crane passed over it.

Traffic on the road that connects San José with the province of Alajuela is flowing in three lanes from Alajuela toward the capital.

The fallen Bailey bridge, which was a temporary fix for a large sinkhole that appeared last June, was removed, and MOPT workers placed a layer of asphalt over the new bridge structure.

José Luis Salas, director of the National Roadway Council, said work on San José-Alajuela lanes will begin Thursday at 10 p.m.

“[On Thursday,] we will remove the other Bailey bridge, and finish placing a layer of asphalt,” Salas said.

Three lanes in the direction of Alajuela will be open by next Tuesday at 5 a.m.
