‘Guaro’ sales up 40 percent in December

The holidays meant a great deal for the state-owned National Liquor Factory (FANAL), which reported a 40 percent increase in sales in December.

The president of the National Production Council, William Barrantes, told local Radio Reloj that preliminary numbers indicated Costa Rica’s popular “guaro” sales rose 40 percent in December when compared to the same month of 2011.

Barrantes said these numbers were achieved with special positioning of the brand during the year-end Zapote fiestas.

FANAL representatives also said that after two years of being absent, their liquor brands will return to Palmares fiestas, the country’s second biggest celebrations.

Palmares fiestas, held in the coffee town of the same name – a 45-minute drive northwest of San José – are scheduled for Jan. 9-21.

Barrantes said they will be watching for counterfeit liquor, which has affected the company’s sales in recent years.
