Increase in water tariffs proposed to reduce consumption

The Regulatory Authority for Public Services proposed a temporary increase in water tariffs as way to conserve water during the dry season, which in Costa Rica runs from December through May.

The temporary rate would be applied gradually, starting from a monthly consumption of 15 cubic meters.

Records from the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) show a reduction of 10-25 percent in the volume of rainfall in 2012, and IMN forecasts similar figures for this year.

The Water and Sewer Institute (AyA) last week began a regulated supply of water in some cantons of the Central Valley, and it does not rule out the possibility of extending the rationing until June.

A study released by AyA in 2012 showed that Ticos consume 8 percent more water than the global average.

The proposal is still under study and will be submitted to a public consultation in coming days.
