Wildfire burns 575 hectares on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast

A squad of 30 firefighters is battling a wildfire that is raging through a forested area in the central Pacific town of Esparza.

Costa Rica’s Firefighters Corps reports that some 575 hectares have already been destroyed by a fire that started last week.

The fire has two focal points that firefighters attack with two water pumps and three support vehicles. The area is mostly pasture, and strong winds from Costa Rica’s dry season are hampering firefighters’ efforts.

Last weekend, firefighters prevented the blaze from destroying a poultry farm.

Two firefighters were treated for fatigue on Sunday, and efforts were suspended at night because of dangerous wildlife in the area that could put firefighters’ safety at risk.
