Travel Alert: Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo closed over the weekend

The section of Route 32, the main road connecting San José with the Caribbean province of Limón, through Braulio Carrillo National Park will be closed this weekend, March 5 and 6.

The National Power and Light Company and the National Roadway Council (CONAVI) need to perform repair and maintenance works at the Zurquí tunnel.

The closure covers the stretch of road starting at the route’s toll station in Heredia up to the Río Frío intersection heading to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, the Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) reported.

MOPT’s emergency response director, David Meléndez, said the electric wiring in the Zurquí tunnel and 64 lamps will be replaced. “Currently the tunnel has lost about 60 percent of its lighting system, therefore work to improve transit through the tunnel is urgent,” he said.

CONAVI staff will begin work on the site Thursday, including weeding out the areas next to the tunnel’s entrances. That work, however, will not affect transit through the tunnel, the agency said.

Meléndez urged travelers to use alternate routes over the weekend, either Route 10 between Cartago and Siquirres, or vía the Vara Blanca–Sarapiquí road in Heredia.
