TRAVEL ALERT: Heavy rains close road to Arenal Volcano

Heavy rains have claimed another major road in Costa Rica this season.

The National Roadway Council (CONAVI) announced that several landslides forced the closure of a section of route 142 between Tilarán, Guanacaste and La Fortuna, Alajuela, at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Route 142 hugs Lake Arenal and is one of the major roadways to Costa Rica’s iconic Arenal Volcano.

The Tico Times confirmed that the Arenal Observatory Lodge was still accessible for travelers coming from San José.

CONAVI said in a statement that teams were already at the scene and would work through the weekend to get the roadway open again.
