67 Costa Rican municipalities now have ordinances banning GMO crops

With the passage of a new ordinances in the Caribbean slope town of Siquirres and the southern Pacific city of Golfito 82 percent of Costa Rican municipalities have now banned the growth of genetically modified crops.

Although municipal governments across the country seem eager to jump on the GMO-free bandwagon, without a national ban the ordinances are not enforceable. GMO projects previously approved by the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry will continue, even in municipalities with bans.
