Anglers in Guanacaste, Caribbean taking their pick

Guanacaste is once again the hotspot this week, with anglers pretty much picking and choosing what they want to catch. Lots of marlin and sails are available offshore, and schools of wahoo have been moving in and out of the area. Wahoo to 60 pounds have been hitting the decks of late. Inshore, the bite is strong for roosterfish, snapper and amberjack.

In the Central Pacific region of Los Sueños and Quepos, things are a little slower. Boats out of Los Sueños are working hard to bring one or two sails up in the spread. A lot of boats are opting for the good bite on reefs for grouper and snapper. In Quepos, the sails’ bite is a little better but still nothing to jump up and down about, and a few tuna have been taking up the slack.

Down south, there have been plenty of marlin, but a lack of anglers to chase them. John Bretza of Okuma Tackle had his son Zander took a 300-pound blue marlin offshore and a couple of nice roosterfish near the beach.

On the Caribbean, boats are getting outside and finding tarpon bunched up between Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado. Boats have been hooking four to six per day. Inside, the snook bite continues to be good inside the Tortuguero river mouth and some snapper are hitting lures in the same area.
