Things started out a little strange for the Cub Amateur annual tarpon tournament held this year out of Tortuguero. The weather was weird, the ocean rougher than normal and the bite not that good. The tournament – which consisted of a half-day of fishing last Friday, all day Saturday and a half-day Sunday – brought 27 anglers, 72 releases and many more hook-ups.
The tournament began slowly, with only nine tarpon landed the first afternoon. Fishing was a little better on day two, and 32 releases were recorded. By Sunday morning, conditions had returned to normal for September and the chew was on.
Thirty-two fish were landed Sunday morning before the first leg of the tournament concluded, and Capt. Eddie Brown, who has fished the tournament for the last 36 years, guided his crew to 12 releases on Sunday. His wife, Cynthia, took the lead with eight fish.
The second leg of the tournament will be fished October 19-21. The top anglers were as follows:
1 | Brown, Cynthia | 100 | 300 | 400 | 800 |
2 | Saénz, Mario | 200 | 500 | 700
3 | Paéz, Carlos R. | 100 | 300 | 200 | 600 |
4 | Laurencich, Federico | 200 | 400 | 600
5 | Domínguez, Domingo | 200 | 200 | 200 | 600 |
6 | Schifter, José | 200 | 300 | 500 |
