Fishing on the upswing countrywide

Fishing is starting to improve all over the country. Dorado (dolphin fish) are everywhere, keeping anglers busy reeling in the golden-good eating fish. Most fish are running about 25 pounds each, and are great fun because of their acrobatics. Up in Guanacaste, sails and some marlin are taking baits as well as roosters, amberjack and a wahoo here and there inshore.

There have been a lot of marlin hanging around floating debris around Los Sueños. Dorado have also moved in and are hanging around debris in current lines. Those who know the spots are scoring grouper while bottom fishing.

There have been so many dorado off Quepos that the price at the dock dropped, and commercial boats were running all the way to Playa del Coco to get a better price. There have been reports of a few sails and a marlin popping up.

Down south, the water has been green out to 40 miles, and the only offshore action has been dorado. With so many dorado moving in, the marlin fishing should pick up, because marlin like slurping down dorado. The billfish action will pick up in the Central and South Pacific over the next few months.

Anglers are hooking 10-15 tarpon per boat over on the Caribbean side. The second leg of the annual Club Amateur de Pesca Tarpon tournament begins Oct. 19, and there should be plenty of fish around to keep the tournament close. Cynthia Brown currently leads halfway through, with eight releases.
