Costa Rica among targets of US, Latin America child porn raids

MEXICO CITY – Sixty people have been arrested on charges of child pornography and three minors were rescued in a joint operation with FBI agents and police in Argentina, Chile and Mexico, officials here said.

The minors, aged 9, 14 and 15, were rescued in Mexico as part of “Operation Without Borders,” Mexico’s National Security Commission (CNS) said in a statement late Sunday.

The minors were allegedly “used by close relatives or neighbors to obtain images of child pornography that were later posted on Internet sites, on social media networks and sent by email,” the statement read.

Eight of the arrests took place in Mexico, the CNS said, without releasing names or dates.

Regarding the 52 other arrests, the statement said only that search warrants were carried out in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Guatemala, Paraguay, Venezuela and the United States.

Uruguayan authorities reported Saturday that as part of Operation Without Borders four suspects between the ages of 32 and 61 were arrested in possession of child porn pictures and videos.
