Little Mermaid ballet, Gamer Fair, and other happenings around Costa Rica

Dance: “The Little Mermaid”

The National Theater presents a ballet of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic children’s tale. The performance is based on classic ballet patterns, but also integrates contemporary movement and aerial dance.

“La Sirenita” will be performed at the National Theater, downtown San José. Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Oct. 17 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. ₡6,000 ($12) for students, ₡12,000 ($24) general admission. For more information call 2010-1111, or visit the Theater Website.

Music: Friday’s Anniversary

Friday’s Restaurant is celebrating its 30th anniversary with Wednesdays special musical sessions (Calypso night on Oct. 21, and Costa Rican classic music night on Oct. 28), Friday concerts, including “Las Tortugas” Oct. 16 and “Son de Tikizia” Oct. 23.

Theater: “The Little Prince”

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous work comes to life in a new way: a puppet show, with original music by Costa Rican musician Raúl Arias.

“Connecturday”

The Children’s Museum will host a two-day fair for gamers featuring Starcraft, Podemon, and FIFA tournaments. Free console use, retro gaming, expo illustration, expo modelling, cosplay contest and more.

“Storytelling Morning”

In celebration of Senior Citizens’ Month and Cultures Day, the Central Bank Museum invites families to listen to indigenous Costa Rican tales and legends with special guest Severiano Fernádez, who is Cabécar.

Dance: “Dirge: The passage to the afterlife”

An interdisciplinary project that features 45 artists, all co-producers, where pre-Columbian and colonial funeral rituals are represented.

“Canto fúnebre: el paso al más allá” will be performed Oct. 17 – 18 at Museo de Jade, downtown San José, at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24 – 25 at Centro Cultural Omar Dengo, downtown Heredia, at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 – Nov. 1 at the Dance School at the Omar Dengo Campus of the Universidad Nacional, in Heredia, at 7 p.m. Free. Theater: “Puzzle”

Seven different stories which, at some point, all intertwine, offer a critique of increasing violence in Costa Rican and the country’s “pecking order.”

“Rompecabezas” will be performed Oct. 17 – Nov. 1 at the Óscar Fessler Theatre, inside the National Theater. Sat. at 8 p.m., and Sun. at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. ₡2,000 ($4) for students, ₡4,000 ($8) general public. For more information call 2221-1273.

Skapolis Festival

The second edition of the country’s best ska music festival takes place on Saturday. Guests bands are Askatasuna, Milly Majuc, Adaptados, Endemia, UFO, and Sr. Mephisto.

“Festival Skapolis” takes place Oct. 17 at Amón Solar, Barrio Amón, San José. 5 p.m. ₡4,000 ($8). More info at the Festival Facebook page.

Music: Spanish Baroque

The Ganassi group will feature Kattia Calderón, playing the recorder; Mariana Salas, violin; Esteban Rojas, viola da gamba; Oscar Jiménez, baroque guitar; Tania Vicente, tiorba; and Juan Carlos Soto, percussion.

“Barroco hispano” performs Oct. 20 at the María Clara Cullell room at the University of Costa Rica, San Pedro. 7 p.m. Free.
