A landslide at 8 p.m. Thursday night left at least 40 vehicles trapped for more than 12 hours, according to the Transport Ministry (MOPT).
MOPT officials began digging out the drivers at 5 a.m. Friday morning and were able to free them by 8:15 a.m., but not without shutting down the road at the 39 kilometer mark. A line of cars and trucks were reported backed up all the way into San José Friday morning. As of noon on Friday the route was re-opened, but traffic jams are expected to continue for several more hours
