Top U.S. diplomat for Latin America to visit region this week

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The head of U.S. diplomacy for Latin America, Roberta Jacobson, will travel to Central America this week for talks with local officials on security and the fight against organized crime, the U.S. State Department announced Monday.

Jacobson will visit El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, where she will participate in a summit of Central American Integration System (SICA), a statement said. The trip begins Tuesday and ends Friday.

Assistant Secretary Jacobson “will reinforce our commitment to regional security partnerships and highlight our integrated approach of cooperation through the Regional Security Initiative for Central America,” the statement added.

Washington has pledged $361 million for that plan, which aims to alleviate the situation in Central America, which has become the world’s most violent region thanks to organized crime and drug trafficking, according to United Nations figures.

The U.S. joined SICA as an observer in May.
