Costa Rica’s largest theater will close its doors after 33 years. Cine Magaly, located in Barrio California in San José, will shutter its doors in late May or early June. CCM Cinemas, the company that manages Cine Magaly, confirmed the closure to the daily La NacÃon on Wednesday. The one-screen theater opened on July 17, 1978 and has only one screen. The screening room seats 550 people.
Due to its large size, the theater has hosted many premieres of Costa Rican films throughout the years. A spokeswoman told La Nación the theater is closing after being squeezed out by more popular megaplexes in the capital. Cine Magaly was the first in the country to have reclining seats and the first in Central America to utilize a digital sound system. The future of the building is also up in the air, and will be decided in the upcoming months.
