Worried about getting ripped off by a Costa Rican cab? There’s an app for that

It doesn’t matter how many times you have been to Costa Rica, how long you have lived here or how good your Spanish is; chances are you’ve been overcharged by a taxi more than once. But now, Taxiando, a new phone app, let’s you have your own personal taxi meter on your phone.

Using GPS and a timer, Taxiando tracks the distance and time to determine the cost of the ride. The meter cost in the app updates in real time as if it was a regular taxi meter. If a user hits the “Iniciar” button at the same time that the taxi driver starts the meter, then the costs at the end of the ride should be the same. Although, Taxiando’s company, La Creativería, warns that the GPS can be affected by a loss in signal.

The app is available on both Android and IOS. Take that, María manipulators!
