Salvadoran President Reiterates Threat Posed by Volcano

SAN SALVADOR (EFE) – Salvadoran President TonySaca this week reiterated that Santa Ana Volcano “coulderupt again at any moment,” and insisted that the neighboringpopulation continue to take precautionary measures.The volcano, located 50 km west of the capital, eruptedOct. 1, killing two people, causing thousands to evacuatetheir homes and scorching surrounding crop harvests.The government has declared the highest state of alertfor the 5 km around the volcano.“The important thing to remember is that this is an activevolcano that could surprise us at any moment,” Saca said.Scientists say the volcano could erupt at any time, spewingmagma and ash.
