U.S. Shipping Company Employee Killed in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA – A group of unknown gunmen shot to death an employee of a U.S. shipping company in the northern city of San Pedro Sula on Saturday night, police said.

A police spokesman told journalists that Honduran citizen Allan Sanders, 42, was killed by several men who attacked him when he left the firm’s office.

He said that Sanders was the chief of operations for U.S. firm SeaBoard Marine in the Central American country, adding that no arrests had been made as yet in the case.

The murder came just hours after Honduran President Manuel Zelaya launched in San Pedro Sula a program to create neighborhood citizens committees to help guarantee local security with the support of the police.

At the ceremony announcing the creation of the so-called “citizen safety committees,” Zelaya asked for public support for the project “because violence is a problem for all Hondurans that the government cannot solve alone.”
