PANAMA CITY – The head of Panama’s prison system and the wardens of two penitentiaries this week were fired from their jobs following the discovery of luxury jail cells that were being used for influential drug traffickers.
Interior Minister Olga Golcher said at a press conference that it was decided to remove prison system chief Carlos Landero from his post after the discovery of luxury cells at the La Joyita prison.
Some of the cells used for drug traffickers reportedly included plasma televisions, refrigerators, air conditioning, laptop computers and other high-end items, including luxury tile flooring.
