New Port Law Aims to Help Exports, Investment

MANAGUA – The Association of Producers and Exporters (APEN) has drafted a proposal for a new Port Law aimed at helping to facilitate exports and attract investment to help construct and modernize the country’s port infrastructure.

The legal initiative was presented by APEN president Jorge Brenes Oct. 24 to shipping and transport companies and government officials to help garner political support for the initiative before presenting it to the legislative National Assembly.

Brenes said that with the new law, the private sector hopes that investment will be generated to construct new ports that are equal to or better than the ports in Honduras and Costa Rica.

“The idea is to become more competitive in exports,” Brenes said. “We don’t have a single port on the Caribbean coast, which is one of the main reasons why we are interested in this law to promote investment in the country.”
