Honduras to define sea border with Jamaica

TEGUCIGALPA – Officials from Honduras and Jamaica will meet Thursday in the Caribbean city of Tela to define maritime borders, Honduran Foreign Minister Arturo Corrales said on Monday.

“There are proposals for a maritime delimitation. We expect the process to be expedited (…) so we can finish defining Honduras’ border in the Caribbean Sea,” he added.

Corrales also said that “the issue is on track” and the missions will discuss in Tela, 300 km north of Tegucigalpa, specific proposals to move towards an agreement.

Last August, Honduras concluded maritime delimitation with Cuba and has already defined limits with Nicaragua, Mexico and Grand Cayman, but is still pending negotiations with Jamaica, Guatemala and Belize.

Honduras stopped having a maritime border with Colombia after a ruling from the International Court of Justice in The Hague granted some 90,000 square kilometers to Nicaragua in the Caribbean that the South American country considered theirs.
