Mejía Godoy Asks Gov’t To Stop Playing His Songs

Revolutionary singer-songwriter Carlos Mejía Godoy asked the Sandinista government last week to stop using his songs at government rallies.

Mejía Godoy, who has broken with the Sandinista Front and is a vocal critic of President Daniel Ortega, wrote an open letter to First Lady Rosario Murillo asking her to stop using his famous Sandinista tune, “La Consigna,” one of the more famous revolutionary songs spelling out the letters of the FSLN, the acronym for Ortega’s party.

The revolutionary singer reminded the government that his songs are copyrighted in Spain, and that the only song he ever gave the Sandinista government permission to use was the old Sandinista Anthem.
