Study Shows Water Levels Lowering in Lake Cocibolca

Despite recent flooding following 24 days of rainfall, the average level of LakeCocibolca has decreased by 27 centimeters since the 1970s, according to a study by the Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER).

INETER hydrologist Isaiah Montoya said the average lake levels have dropped every decade for the past 38 years from 31.47 meters in the 1970s to 31.20 meters.

Montoya admits “we don’t know if this is a temporary or more permanent change.”

“We have a lot to do to be able to demonstrate whether climate change is occurring in Nicaragua or not.”
