New U.S. Ambassador To C.R. Arrives Sunday

The newly appointed United States ambassador to Costa Rica is expected to arrive Sunday, and she will officially be sworn in sometime next week, according to the U.S. Embassy.

The U.S. Senate approved in December the nomination of Anne Slaughter Andrew. President Barack Obama had selected her in October to replace Peter Cianchette at the post.

Andrew, an environmental consultant and lawyer, was co-founder, owner and director of the Anson Group LLC, a medical biotechnology consulting company. She also has been active in support of environmental and conservation organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, and the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation.

According to her official biography, Andrew graduated from GeorgetownUniversity with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received her law degree from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, where she was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Law Review.

The diplomatic affairs blog Diplopundit (www.diplopundit.blogspot.com) notes that Andrew’s husband, Joe Andrew, is a prominent Indiana Democrat and supporter of Barack Obama. Also, it says he is a former national chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He also served as chair of the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. According to the blog, the couple has two school-age children, Meredith and Will.
