Nicaraguan Culture Week Aims to Improve Relations

To foster improved relations between often hostile neighboring countries, Costa Rica will host a Nicaraguan Culture Week beginning Monday.

Nicaraguan film, theater, modern dance, crafts and traditional ballet events will run morning to evening Sept. 11-17, according to Margarita Guerrero, advisor at the Nicaraguan Embassy in San José.

“Within the framework of the (Central American) national holidays, this activity has the aim of strengthening cultural and fraternal ties between the two countries,” Guerrero said, referring to Independence Day, celebrated Sept. 15 in most of Central America.

Venues for the activity, organized by the Nicaraguan Embassy, the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the San José Mayor’s Office, will include the Technology Institute of Costa Rica in Cartago, east of the capital, and downtown San José’s Contemporary Art and DesignMuseum and Central Park.

Except for a gala ballet presentation set for Sept. 17 at the Melico Salazar Theater in San José, entrance to all events will be free. Funds from the ballet will go to the construction of a social development center called Sister María Romero for young people from the La Carpio shantytown, west of the capital.

For more information, contact the Nicaraguan Embassy at 222-2373.
