Boca Barranca Hosts Weekend Surf Benefit

Sign-ups end at 7 tonight for this weekend’s charitable surfing tournament at Boca Barranca, near the central Pacific port city of Puntarenas.

Surfers will compete starting at 7 a.m. tomorrow, riding what CostaRicaCenter. com calls the second-longest wave in the country. Proceeds from the ¢5,000 (about $10) entry fees will go toward the Monserrat Children’s Home, a nearby institution that supports 22 kids.

“We’ve all known the important work this institution has done to benefit the kids of Puntarenas; this is why we decided to work hard to support them,” said Rándall Chávez of the Puntarenas Surf Committee, sponsor of the tournament.

Winners will be announced Sunday afternoon after the final surf-offs. Costa Rica’s representative surfers in the mid-October World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, California, will be among this weekend’s competitors. Surfers can sign up today at Hotel Barranca, Jass (Jacó, central Pacific coast), Ozono (Puntarenas) and Zapatería 3A (Orotina, northwest of San José).
