Culture Ministry Creates Fund for Artists

The Culture Ministry yesterday unveiled a new fund created to help Costa Rican artists with audiovisual, dance, theater and music works.

The ¢175 million ($339,147) fund, called PROARTES, will be available to members of the “independent art sector” and aims to promote, support and preserve art and culture in Costa Rica.

A contest will be held to determine which projects receive the funds. Cultural organizations and independent artists are eligible to participate. Drama, dance and audiovisual projects, as well as community events such as workshops, conferences and seminars, are eligible to receive the funds.

“The Culture Ministry is showing its confidence in the ability of Costa Ricans to generate creative projects. This shows the government’s ability to comply with the responsibility it has to the art sector,” said Culture Minister María Elena Carballo, according to a statement.

The Melico Salazar Theater will be responsible for managing the fund, the statement said. Artists have until Oct. 30 to register for the contest, and can do so by downloading the registration form from the theater’s Web site at www.teatromelico.go.cr, or by calling Jocelyn Rey at 233-5424.
