National Theater announces 2012 lineup

Music enthusiasts, drama lovers, dance aficionados and general escapists, listen up. The National Theater’s 2012 lineup has been announced, and featured performances include Puccini’s “Tosca,” “Oliver Twist” by TNT Theatre Britain and the return of “The Nutcracker” ballet.

Put on by 3,280 artists, directors, dancers, choreographers, singers and musicians, the National Theater performances will include 18 dance shows, 44 music concerts and 148 dramatic renderings.

National Theater Director Adriana Collado and Culture Minister Manuel Obregón announced the schedule last Thursday.

“The National Theater’s name is now justified by the large number of national artists we see in the programming,” Obregón said.

The performances begin Feb. 14 with the launch of this year’s Theater at Noon series with “Pendulum,” a work of interpretive dance put on by the University of Costa Rica’s Danza Abierta program. A total of 36 different shows will make up the Theater at Noon series, with performances every Tuesday at noon.

The Music at Dusk series will also return starting April 12, offering a total of 32 performances Thursdays at 5 p.m. in the theater’s foyer.

The year’s schedule also includes a Feb. 23 concert by Cuban singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés and the National Symphony Orchestra’s concert season, which kicks off March 16, as well as flamenco and ballet shows, poetry readings, recitals and the 19th Graciela Moreno Choreography Festival.
