Cultural Documentary Premieres in San José

MOVIEGOERS will catch a glimpse into the rich musical culture of Siquirres when Cine Variedades hosts the premiere of “Paso a Paso: ASentimental Journey,” tonight at 6 p.m.The film tells the story of fictionalcharacter Mr. Pitters, an aging, blind calypso musician from the Caribbeanslope town of Siquirres who searches the region for an old friend. This different style of documentary focuses on the real-life conversations Mr. Pittershas with members of the indigenous population about the history of the black community there and how it has been affected by recent commercial development.After the premiere, the film will be shown at Cine El Semáforo in San Pedro, east of San Jose, at 8 p.m. every Saturday in September.The second in a series of community- themed, “docufiction” -style films released by production company Videos Bicho, the film is presented in a mix of Spanish, English and the creole patois spoken in parts of the Caribbean coast. It will be shown with Spanish subtitles at the premiere and September showings; English subtitles will be included on the DVD, which is now for sale through the production company’s Web site, www.videosbicho.com.The film, which runs approximately 30 minutes, was produced in conjunction with the nonprofit Committee for the Recovery of the Cultural Values of Siquirres.General admission to both the premiere and the Saturday showings is ¢1,000 ($2).
