Costa Rica’s National Theater Celebrates 129 Years With Free Tours and Concerts Today

Costa Rica’s National Theater is celebrating its 129th anniversary today, with free guided tours, live music and activities in downtown San José, giving everyone a chance to experience one of our most recognizable historical landmarks. The celebration includes free admission to the theater during the morning and two outdoor concerts in the Plaza de la Cultura during the afternoon and evening.

The events are part of a monthlong anniversary program featuring more than 30 cultural activities. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors can enter the National Theater for guided tours offered every 20 minutes. The tours, called Travesía, take guests through some of the building’s best-known spaces, including its main auditorium and the Foyer, an ornate reception area that reflects the theater’s European architectural influences.

The celebration moves outdoors at 2 p.m., when the Orquesta Lubin Barahona y sus Caballeros del Ritmo is scheduled to perform a free concert in the Plaza de la Cultura, directly outside the theater. At 6 p.m., Costa Rican group Un Rojo Reggae Band will take the stage for another free performance, bringing the anniversary celebrations to a close for the day.

The weekend festivities began last night with Gandhi Sinfónico, a performance featuring Costa Rican rock band Gandhi alongside the Orquesta Universal. The National Theater officially opened on October 17, 1897, during a period when Costa Rica’s coffee industry was helping transform the economy.

Coffee exports generated much of the wealth that supported the construction of the building, which was intended to provide San José with a cultural venue comparable to those found in major European cities. Over the following 129 years, the theater became a central part of Costa Rica’s cultural identity, hosting orchestras, international performers, plays, dance productions and official ceremonies. Its location in the heart of San José has also made it a popular stop for tourists exploring the capital.

Culture and Youth Minister Jorge Rodríguez Vives said the anniversary is intended to bring the public closer to the historic building and encourage people to see it as a place that belongs to all Costa Ricans. The anniversary activities will continue throughout October. On October 21 and 22, the theater will present El patio de las abuelas, a dance production exploring the cultural influences that have shaped Costa Rican identity.

The Quinteto Astor Piazzolla will perform on the 23rd, followed by the flamenco ballet Carmen vs. Carmen on the 24th and 25th. The month’s celebrations will end October 30 with a performance by Costa Rica’s National Symphony Orchestra. For anyone spending today in San José, the anniversary offers an opportunity to combine a visit to one of the capital’s most famous buildings with free live entertainment. The morning tours and outdoor concerts are open to the public without an admission charge.

Additional information about the anniversary program and upcoming performances is available on the National Theater’s official website.
