Cards for Good Causes

Two organizations have kicked off their annual Christmas drives, selling cards and other products to raise money for charity.

The Asociación Damas Naciones Unidas will again be selling cards and gifts from UNICEF in its 2008 Christmas campaign.

The proceeds will go to institutions that help Costa Rican children.

Packs of six cards and envelopes cost ¢7,000 ($13), with smaller cards going for ¢5,500 ($10). Jigsaw puzzles, teddy bears and tree ornaments are among the other holiday gifts available.

Cards are available for sale every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Jiménez y Tanzi, across from the Auto Mercado in the western suburb of San Rafael de Escazú, or call 2289-5303 or 8360-1283. They will also be for sale at Librería Internacional’s main stores as of some time this week.

Meanwhile, the Damas Voluntarias of the Escazú Social Welfare Association are also selling Christmas cards and calendars once again this holiday season. The group will use the proceeds to buy uniforms, backpacks and school supplies for children in need.

Hanging calendars featuring paintings of Costa Rican scenes cost ¢5,000 ($9), and desk calendars cost ¢3,000 ($5.45). Christmas cards are ¢500 ($0.90) each.

Damas Voluntarias products can be bought at The Tico Times’ office in downtown San José, at the Auto Mercado in Escazú and at Jiménez y Tanzi. For other locations, call 2228-0279 or e-mail cguerra@racsa.co.cr.
