Costa Rica to promote tourist attractions at 26 international fairs

Officials from the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) on Monday announced new plans for attracting tourists in coming months.

ICT officials joined tourism business leaders to outline a strategy involving the participation of Costa Rica in 26 international tourism fairs from September 2013 to April 2014.

One of the main goals is to promote the country’s rich biodiversity to non-traditional markets such as Russia, Brazil and China.

ICT also plans to promote the country as a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) destination and has signed the country up to participate in five specialized fairs in Europe, Latin America and the United States.

“Fairs offer an important opportunity to promote Costa Rica’s tourism strengths and capabilities,” said Tourism Minister Allan Flores. The main objectives at these global exhibitions are to set business meetings with wholesalers, travel agents and specialized media, he added.

The fair season for Costa Rica began last week in São Paulo, Brazil, and will continue with a series of events in Canada, the U.S., Spain, Germany, France, Holland, Sweden, Belgium, Argentina and Mexico, among others.

Tourism is one of Costa Rica’s main economic activities, and last year the country received more than 2.1 million visitors, according to officials.
